Portland United Res 1 Balti Sports 2

Saturday 05th December 2020

Portland United were left empty handed in their Dorset Premier League clash against local rivals Balti Sports at The Camp & Satherley Stadium sponsored by Weyline.

The Islanders kicked in to the blustery Portland wind and rain in the first half, they took the lead when Harry Hutchinson put Aaron `shinpads` Ryan whose shot from just inside the area and finding the top corner.

Balti drew level moments later through Danny Andrews with a good finish to beat Josh Hadley in The Blues goal. It could have got better for Balti as Ethan Devaneys long range effort cannoned off the home sides crossbar.

Portland could have gone in at the break in the lead when JJ Reads effort beat the keeper but not the covering defender who cleared from below his own crossbar after Andy Nott had pulled off a good save from Ryan.
In the second half Balti went close when Sammy Nichols header hit the post before being cleared whilst at the other end Manny Roche saw his free kick go high over the away sides crossbar.

Balti took the lead, unfortunately for the home side it would be a mistake from Dylan Riley whose header back to the home keeper Hadley was dropped short allowing Matt Burrows to find what proved to be the winner.

Portland applied some pressure in the final 10 minutes with Shane Evans thunderbolt header being cleared by a defender on the line under his own crossbar but Balti remained dangerous on the counter attack as substitute Ricky Lane spurned a good chance to go one-on-one.

Looking back at the game Portland United Res manager Justin Faulkner commented "We knew it would be a tough game, Balti are consistently in the top 5/6 of this division and are a very good side. They dont do draws, before the game they had won 4 lost 4 whereas we have had 3 draws in our 6 games losing just 2. We didnt play as well as we could have, I dont think the weather helped in that respect and added to that we`ve had just one training session back from a month off, I`m certain that didnt help matters either. But we will take the positives from the game and the fact that ultimately one mistake was the difference between the sides as I said against an established team in this division. We have made numerous chances in the game but we havent made the most with them, goals change games and had we gone in at 2-1 with the 2 chances just before half time I would have backed us to get something from the game."

Faulkner also added "We will analyse the game and regroup for next week when we face another tough side in Bournemouth Sports, hopefully we can shake off the rusty-ness and give a better account of ourselves, we are only 7 games in so plenty left to play for this season."
