‘I believe in squad’, says Franklyn Clarke

Friday 23rd October 2020

PORTLAND United boss Franklyn Clarke reiterated his immense belief in the Blues’ young crop of talent ahead of a trip to Tadley Calleva tomorrow (3pm).

Clarke picked up a 1-0 win over Amesbury Town on his Sydenham Wessex Premier Division debut but has since lost 8-1 at Cowes and 2-1 to Hamworthy with a cruel stoppage-time goal.

Portland’s vastly improved performance against the Hammers – which deserved a point – has confirmed to Clarke the levels his players are capable of producing.

“I believe in them, and I’ll play them,” he told Echosport.

“Whether it’s at Tadley, whether it’s (home), I brought these lads in because they’re good players but more importantly they’re good characters who I know will always give me everything.

“The fans were so proud of the effort (against Hamworthy). They watched a Portland side with legs, energy, desire, fight, passion – everything I asked of them.

“We have to take that performance into (Tadley). We’re a young team so we might be inconsistent.

“Then as they grow, gain more experience, they gain that consistency we need.”

Ryan McKechnie (ankle) and Steve Boore (ribs) should be fit, while Joel Hewitt (hamstring) will be assessed.
