BRIDPORT RES 3 PORTLAND UTD RES 1

Saturday 02nd March 2019

Portland United Reserves poor form continued on Saturday as they were beaten at St Marys field despite leading 1-0 at half time.

It was The Blues that started the brightest and took the lead on 8 minutes when Aaron Ryan scored a rare headed goal from Callum Normans cross.

The Blues threatened and it could have been a bigger scoreline at half time as Stefanos Stavrianos was denied twice by the home stopper, both times through one on one. Josh Camp saw his corner bounce off the top of the home sides crossbar before Reece Frost saw his low drive go inches wide of the post.

In the second half Bridport equalised with The Blues looking for a flag that did not come, this seemed to be the turning point in the game as Bridport got on top of a young Portland side. Bridport added their second midway through the half with a well taken volley that found the far corner before adding the gloss to a game they could and probably should have been out of at half time.

Looking back at the game Portland United Reserve manager commented "We are a little bit disappointed, at half time we spoke about guarding against complacency and turning out a half just as good as the 1st, we just didn`t do that. We didn`t even get going in the second half, we were depleted due to 1st team call ups but I`m not going to use that as an excuse because we know how this works and our role in that respect and in turn had to call up players from our A team."

Faulkner also added "I was disappointed the 1st goal stood, he was in an offiside position 6 yards from goal when the ball was played and still offside when the ball came to him, on another day had it been an official linesman I think it gets ruled out. That was the turning point because we had been superb defensively and that meant we had to come out which left us exposed. No complaints about the other 2.

"The youngsters will no doubt learn from this, we had another very very young side, in which we competed in the main and like I say we could have been 3 or 4 goals up at half time. But we do need to be more ruthless in front of goal. Going in to the break with bigger lead then the second half is a much different game."
