CORFE CASTLE 5 PORTLAND UTD RES 3

Saturday 08th December 2018

Portland United came back from Corfe Castle without anything to show for their efforts in The Dorset Premier League and their 1st back to back defeats in the league this season.
It was the visitors who went in front as Rory Zima laid the ball off to brother Sean Zima whose low drive went in at the near post.

Corfe were gifted an equaliser soon after as Lloyd Beals gave away a free kick on the edge of The Blues box before Matt Camp, deputising in the Portland goal, failed to deal with the resulting kick.

With the pitch cutting up Corfe edged ahead before half time as a bobble off the difficult surface saw Corfe break clear and score despite the best interest of the recovering defenders.

After the break Corfe scored almost immediately as a long ball was allowed to bounce and saw Corfe in behind again to score.

Portland did bring themselves back in to the game when Beals cross was converted by Sol Roche but that was short lived as Corfe netted from a cross in to the box. The game was then put beyond doubt as another long ball was converted.

Portland reduced the arrears when Roche played in Aaron Ryan to score but it was a case of too little too late.

Looking back at the game Portland United Reserves Manager Justin Faulkner commented "Unfortunately we weren`t good enough today, the conditions played some part in that but we weren`t at the races which is disappointing as we knew Corfe would want revenge for the defeat at our place and they were on a run of a 2 game winning run. I can honestly say we have given them 3 goals today, just by individual errors and we lacked any urgency or energy. That`s not good enough for a club like Portland United. We did have alot of the ball and knocked it about well but for all our possession we didn`t really hurt them too much, we certainly didn`t make the most of the good opportunities we created.

Faulkner also added "I don`t like using availability as an excuse and as a Reserve side you aren`t going to field the same side for many consecutive games, we just got to get on with it really. Thanks to Matt Camp who went in goal for us today, he isn`t a recognised keeper and feels he should have done better with their 1st goal. I think me and my management team need to have a look at what we`ve got and take stock because this team is better than what we are currently seeing, we need to stop this run so some difficult decisions may need to be made."
