Portland United Reserves 4 Corfe Mullen United 0

Saturday 12th May 2018

Portland United Reserves claimed all 3 points on Saturday as they despatched Corfe Mullen United in The Dorset Senior League.

In the opening period The Blues were guilty of missing some clear cut chances whilst the away keeper was in inspired form pulling off some top drawer saves to keep Corfe Mullen in the game.

The breakthrough did arrive midway through the 1st half as Louis Hankins low cross was steered on target by Rory Zima beyond the dive of the visitors keeper.

In the second half Portland Goalkeeper Ross Jones made a fine stop to preserve The Blues lead but that is as good as it would get for the visitors as the hosts regained control.

The second arrived as a Corfe Mullen defender was to adjudged to have handled the ball whilst on the floor. Sean Zima slotted the resulting spot kick beyond the diving goalkeeper, his second successful penalty in as many games.

Sean Zima then turned provider as his direct run took him to the by line before picking out Substitute Lance Wilson who thundered a shot in to the back of the net with his first touch.

Portland put the game beyond doubt as Ryan McKechnie fed Che Curran whose run ended with Curran firing a shot low in to the bottom corner of the net.

Looking back at the game Portland United Reserves manager Justin Faulkner commented
"It was comfortable in the end but we passed up so many chances in the opening half hour that you wonder if that 1st goal was ever going to come. Once we had that breakthrough they had to come out a bit more and that gave us a chance to pick them off."

Faulkner also added "That`s another game we have got maximum points from, it is an amazing run of 10 wins and 1 draw in the last 11 games. It also keeps the pressure on Corfe Castle to win their last 2 games, 1 of them is against us on the last day of the season at The Grove, 3 cup finals left and if we can take the points from all of them we will win The Senior League. We`re not getting carried away with that, each game at a time! But that makes our next game massive as we travel away to Wincanton on Tuesday night, who have had some good results of late."
