Merley Cobham 7 Portland Utd Res 1

Saturday 06th January 2018

Portland United Reserves crashed out of the Dorset Senior Trophy at the quarter final stage after being well beaten by higher league Merley Cobham Sports. Portland were aiming to reach the Semi Final for the second successive season.

Manager Justin Faulkner described the 24 hours up to and including the game as disasterous.

Faulkner commented "The day started badly with having a player pull out last minute due to illness and then we lost our goal keeper to the first team, the third in 24 hours which would be called up to the Wessex Premier side."

The day didn`t get any better for the patched up Portland side, as early as the 4th minute and the home side were given a harsh penalty when Leon Attree slid in on a difficult surface and was adjusdged to have deliberately handled the shot from all of a yard away.
Merley converting the resulting spot kick.

Portland did have a spell of good possession for 15 minutes midway through the half and created several good chances. Liam Goulds free kick was parried with Aiden Jackson unable to convert the follow up.

Merley ended the resurgence by scoring after a goalmouth scramble and then again right on the stroke of half time.

After the break Merley dominated possession with Portland legs tiring on a heavy pitch and added 4 more goals. Portland did pull one back when Jackson was put clean through by Tom Arliss.

Looking back at the game Faulkner added "Unfortunately due to availability in both our 1st and reserve sides we have been denied the opportunity to field the best side we can and give us the best chance of progression. It feels a bit like all the hard work we have put in to get to this stage has been for nothing."

"The lads we did have gave it a good go, midway through the 1st half we had a spell where we were on top and created some good chances which leaves us thinking what if.

The second half we just didn`t get going, the third goal just before half time seemed to deflate us and the lads lost all confidence that we could get anything from the game, which was disappointing."

Faulkner also added "The only positive I can take from the day was that the lads that went with the 1st team have played Wessex League Premier football and helped the club get three points there. That experience will have been superb for the players and us in the long run. Going forward though we now have to concentrate on the league, our next game isn`t till 20th January. We have only played 8 Senior League games this season. We have 4/5 games in hand on most teams, so we need to focus on that now and put some points on the board. I`m aiming to hit the ground running when we get back in to league action."
