Portland United Res 2 Chickerell United 0

Saturday 09th December 2017

Portland United Reserves returned to league action on Saturday in the Dorset Senior League at The Weyline Stadium. The visitors were top of the league Chickerell United who up this point had only lost 1 game in their first 10 games.

The Blues controlled much of the game from the first whistle and were boosted by first team regular Ryan McKechnie whilst also including Shane Evans, Sean Zima and Lee Sharpe who all have Wessex League games under their belt following the first team games postponement away to Fareham Town in The Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division.

The Blues went ahead when Mckechnie was found by Evans delivery from deep, making no mistake, lobbing former Portland keeper Ian Bickerstaff.

Portland could have taken a bigger lead in to the break as McKechnies fierce drive was blocked on its way goalwards. Adam Ansteys header from a corner was blocked by his own player Aiden Jackson before falling kindly for Bickerstaff. Louis Hankin forced a save from Bickerstaff as his run from left back finished with a powerful strike that the keeper managed to tip over the bar.

After the break Chickerell came out fired up and within minutes had rattled the home sides crossbar, this seemed to kick start Portland back in to action as they continued to have the lions share of possession.

The second goal arrived when Jordan Moore, on as a substitute for the injured Leon Attree squared the ball for Jackson to stab home at the second attempt.

Chickerell werent finished, The Blues keeper Ash Weeks pulling off a tremendous save when Steve Welch went through one on one.

Looking back at the game Portland United Reserves manager commented "We played well today, we dominated for large periods, only scored the 2 goals but they came at the right time. They hit the bar within a couple of minutes of the restart but that was a result of us over playing. Had that gone in it could have been a different game. We are putting together a nice little run of form but we need to guard against complacency.

Faulkner also added "In our first 8 games we have played the top team twice and the second and third placed teams once and we face the fourth placed team next week. So we have hard quite a hard start and we still have quite alot of games in hand. Win those games in hand we will be 4th which is about in and around where we expected to be this season. The away team were moaning about the inclusion of first team players after the final whistle but this is the flip side of the coin to being a reserve side. Sometimes you will be depleted due to 1st team call ups but when they dont have a game we get the use of these fantastic players."

"Only Ryan McKechnie and Sean Zima played last week so from that point of view I could have used more! I think it is a bit hypocritical, I`m sure they use their reserve team in exactly the same way. That`s what we are here for to keep the players match fit and ticking over."

Portland United Reserves travel to last seasons Dorset Senior League Champions Witchampton United next Saturday 2pm kick off.
