Portland United Res 2 Lyme Regis 0

Saturday 02nd December 2017

Portland United safely made it through to The Dorset Senior Cup Quarter final for the second successive season as the disposed of Lyme Regis 2-0 at The Weyline Stadium.

It was Lyme that started the brightest as The Blues struggled to get a foothold in the game but chances were at a premium. Portland came back in to it and went ahead when Aiden Jackson pulled the ball back from the goal line to Shane Evans who made no mistake with an emphatic finish in to the top corner.

It got better for The Blues as youngster Lance Wilson made a late run from midfield before squaring it for Josh Camp to notch his 7th goal in 3 games, for what was a great team goal. Portland took the 2 goal lead in to the break.

Lyme rallied after the break with a change in formation but were limited to long range efforts which Ash Weeks in the Portland goal dealt with comfortably. Portland always looked dangerous on the break. Wilson saw his deft chip just clear the bar with the keeper stranded, which would have ended the game as a contest.

Looking back at the game Portland United Reserves manager Justin Faulkner said "Lyme are a decent side, they went to Shaftesbury Reserves in the last round and beat them 3-0, so it was never going to be easy for us. After the 1st 15 minutes of the 1st half we took control, scoring 2 good goals in the time we were on top. The second half they really committed men forward but the lads defended superbly, individually and as a unit. If we had the desire to defend like that every week we could be alot higher in the table."

Faulkner also added "We seem to be a cup team having got to the semis last season and the quarters already this, whoever we get in the next round will be tough. I`m hoping we tranform that form in to the league, we have a lot of games in hand, but if we are all pulling in the right direction we will be able to climb The Dorset Senior League."

Portland United Reserves will play Merley Cobham Sports away in the quarter final of The Dorset Senior Trophy. The tie will take place Saturday 6th january, 1.30 pm kick off.
