Beaminster 1 Portland United Res 1 (5-6 on Penalties)

Saturday 04th November 2017

Portland United progressed to the 3rd round of the DCFA Senior Trophy at the expense of fellow Senior League side Beaminster. The Blues made it to the semi final of this competotion last season before being knocked out away to evetual Dorset premier League winners Holt Utd.

Portland could have opened the scoring in the early stages as Josh Camp and Antony Carlile fired over when put in good positions.

Both the goals came in the 1st half, the visitors going ahead when Josh Camps delivery in to the box was converted by Aiden Jackson at the second attempt.
The hosts got themselves level 5 minutes later as a parried shot was looped in to the far corner of the net.

Portland had the best chances to win the game in normal time when 3 shots were blocked on the line by a series of saves by the home keeper and blocks from defenders. Ant Carlile will feel he could have done better when played in one on one. With the score level they went in to extra time.

Another 30 minutes couldn`t separate the sides so it would be decided by penalty kicks.
Portland scored 4 of their 1st 5 penalties, which left Beaminsters Tristan Gale the chance toi win the tie for the hosts but Ash Weeks saved well. Aiden Jackson netted his penalty which was followed by another Beaminster penalty kick.

Captain Adam Anstey stepped up to convert penalty no.6 for Portland before Ash Weeks saved another penalty to put The Blues in to round 3 where they will play Lyme Regis at home on 2nd December.

Looking back at the game Portland United Reserves Manager commented "I think we were very slow to get going again this week, as we were against Corfe Castle last week. We scored a good goal but feel the one we conceded could have been avoided but we seemed to switch off. The second half we seemed more composed and controlled the game with good possession and created some really good chances. Even going in to extra time I thought we would go on and win the tie, they got really stretched but we couldnt just find that right ball in the final 3rd. Delighted to get in to the next round, this competition has been good to us in the last few seasons, we hope that continues."

Faulkner also added "We`ve got ourselves on a good run of form at the moment, just 1 defeat in the last 5, which was the disappointing defeat last week that I dont think we deserved. Sometimes you dont always get what you deserve in this game. We have added a few new players since pre season which are bedding in now, the squad is looking bigger with better quality, the lads know there will be competition for places which is healthy."
