Portland Utd Res 2 Broadstone 1

Saturday 07th October 2017

Portland United ended Broadstones unbeaten run on Saturday at The Weyline Stadium in The Dorset Senior League, although The Blues were made to work hard for the points by their stubborn visitors.

Portland started the brightest and enjoyed large spells of possession but struggled to find the breakthrough despite getting in to several good situations, due to wayward finishing and poor decision making in the final 3rd. The teams went in to the break goalless.

Broadstone scored against the run of play just after the restart as a long ball out of defence was seized on by Broadstones nippy forward who rounded Blues keeper Ash Weeks before beating Leon Attree on the line.

Undeterred by this Portland were straight back in to their rhythm and found an equaliser moments later as a cross from the left was deflected past the away stopper.

The winner came 5 minutes from time as Adam Linaker was brought down in the area, dusted himself down and despatched the resulting spot kick for his 1st goal of the season.
Linaker went from hero to zero minutes later though as he was involved in an altercation in the corner whilst trying to run the clock down. Linaker and a Broadstone player were shown straight red cards.

The away keeper pulled off two great saves from Aiden Jackson and Ant Carlile to keep his team in with a shout of getting something from the game. The Blues saw the game out despite a succession of corners late on as Broadstone tried to salvage something from the game.

Looking back at the game Portland United Res manager Justin Faulkner commented "Broadstone are new to the league having gained promotion last season, they have been coming up through the leagues so they have got somewhat of a winning habit. Defensively they were strong, you can see why they haven`t been beaten this season. On the day though I thought we played very well, our ball retention was better which led to long spells of possession. The only disappointment was that we couldnt add to our tally, which I think maybe we should have done."

Faulkner also added "A wins a win though and that is 2 on the bounce as we try and put the 1st 2 games out of our mind, the lads response has been superb. They are a great bunch, we have managed to add a bit of quality and experience which will help the younger lads in the squad. Competition for places is now very high, everyone will need to be near their best to keep their place in this side."
