Poole Borough 4 Portland United Res 3

Saturday 09th September 2017

Portland Reserves Manager Justin Faulkner was left bemused as to how his side fell to defeat at the hands of Poole Borough on Saturday in The Dorset Senior League.

The visitors opened the scoring as Jordan Moores pass in to the box eventually found Jack Drummond who finished, sending the home keeper the wrong way.

The hosts levelled when Louis Hankin conceded a soft free kick wide of the penalty area, the resulting free kick was played in deep to the far post and headed home. The goal stood despite the claims of a foul on Portlands Leon Attree who was seemingly pulled down by the home attacker. The teams went in to the break a a piece despite The Blues dominance of the game.

The Blues continued to dominate proceedings and it was no surprise when they added a second, Aiden Jackson laying the ball to Moore who found the net via the inside of the left hand post.

Poole were on level moments later as the ball was swung in from the right and again headed home from just inside the penalty area.

The home side were buoyed by the goal and went ahead for the first time in the game as a tame effort which appeared to be going wide was deflected in to his own net by Che Curran.

The Blues found an equaliser themselves as Jackson crossed to find the returning Dean Taylor who found the net with a rare headed goal.

Despite Portland being on top for the majority of the game, Poole found a winner following a goal mouth scramble.

Looking back at the game Faulkner commented “I`m not sure how we have managed to lose the game, to come away from home score 3 good goals and lose is absolutely criminal. They`ve only had 5 shots on our goal for the whole 90 minutes yet they have managed to score 4 goals, we have had double or triple that amount. The team are disappointed but even at Senior League level you just can`t switch off, and we had too many do that today. It just seems like every mistake is being punished at the moment.”

Faulkner also added “In terms of a start to the season it has to go down as a bad start, especially when you see the quality we have within the squad. But we aren’t going to push the panic button just yet, leagues and relegations aren’t settled in the first 2 weeks of the season. We do need to put together a nice little run which would see us climb the table.”
