Portland United adjust style of play

Monday 06th August 2018

PORTLAND United boss Brendon King is satisfied with the Blues’ pre-season efforts as the Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division campaign kicks into gear.

King’s men started their season with a 1-0 win against Alresford Town on Saturday, with Lewis Whyton grabbing a late goal to seal the victory.

The Portland manager was full of praise for both players and staff for their summer endeavours.

He told Echosport: “We’ve got everybody that we wanted to get and kept the players that we wanted to keep.

“Stuart (Heath, coach) has done a really good pre-season schedule, I’ve been really impressed with it, and the lads have taken everything on board.”

King has also wasted no time in developing his chosen style of play with the Blues.

He added: “We’ve got a certain style that we want to play and hopefully the supporters will enjoy it.

“We’ve set our stall out and me and Reggie (Mark Carter, assistant) said that is how we’re going to do it.

“It’s what we’ve been working on in training and in pre-season.

“Touch wood we’ve got the lads that want to do it and can do it.

“We feel we have. That’s why we’ve gone down that route.”

But King issued a word of caution regarding rival clubs’ budgets, believing Portland’s to be smaller than several teams in the same division.

“Some of the teams are spending an awful lot of money. Portchester, Horndean, Hamworthy – they’re spending a lot so it’s going to be tough, for sure. What our lads are getting is not a lot. We’re lucky to have a group of players that want to play for the football club,” he said.
