Browne's looking for Rovers return

Friday 18th August 2017

PORTLAND United boss Simon Browne believes “there’s no reason” why his side cannot pull off a giant-killing in their FA Cup first preliminary round tie against Paulton Rovers at Grove Corner tomorrow (3pm).

The Blues earned a home cup tie after beating Plymouth Parkway 1-0 away and will tackle Evo-Stik Southern League West side Rovers for the chance to win £1,925 and potentially a fixture against another club from a higher league.

And Browne told Echosport he believes that Paulton will not be enamoured by the task of playing at Portland.

He said: “The FA Cup has the habit of giant-killing and people making their names for scoring goals and saving penalties. There’s no reason why it couldn’t be Portland, we’ll see whether it could be us.

“We won’t go in as favourites, but we’re playing well at the moment. I can imagine they won’t be relishing coming down to Portland and playing the Wessex League champions.

“Sides that are playing a team from a lower league have that little bit of fear. I’d like to think they will take the game lightly but I expect them to do a professional job.”

Browne also encouraged a good turn-out for the match, saying: “The club is looking forward to it. It’s an expensive business running a football club. Another 100 people at the game will bring that extra bit of money.”

Blues manager Browne also revealed that the club has rsigned left-sided midfielder Carl Morris from Lymington Town. Morris will be “in the reckoning” for the Paulton game, but Shane Evans and Ryan McKechnie miss out.

Matchball sponsor for the game is Quiddles Café & Beach Bar, with Weymouth Terras Café sponsoring the programme.
