RYAN McKechnie scored and was sent off inside 18 minutes as Portland United eased to a 3-0 win at Brockenhurst in the Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division.

Second-half strikes from Alex Halloran and Jamie Beasley wrapped up the win to end the Blues’ four-game away run on a high.

Portland were very unfortunate with injury, with Ed Bastick, Jamie Symes and Beasley all coming off injured.

McKechnie was quick off the mark, needing just nine minutes before he fired in after good work down the right-hand side from Bastick and Darren Watts, the latter of whom put the ball across for the forward to fire in.

However, his time on the pitch quickly came to an end as he earned himself a straight-red card for a late, reckless tackle.

The Blues managed to hold Brockenhurst at bay for the rest of the first half, despite Bastick coming off injured after 38 minutes.

Portland managed to capitalise early on in the second to put some distance between them and their opponents.

It was Halloran with the effort, as he slotted in when a corner got headed out, and he smashed it in through a crowd after 49 minutes.

Symes then came off injured for Crit Clarke, before the Blues’ day was made considerably brighter after 66 minutes when Beasley wrapped up the scoring for the visitors by getting onto the end of a short back pass and rifling in.

Portland could have had another after 80 minutes when the home side gave away a penalty as Sean Stewart was brought down.

However, the effort from Watts was very well-saved by Matt Taylor between the Brockenhurst goal posts.

There was another late chance for the Blues when Stewart was put through on goal, however, the former Weymouth midfielder saw his effort saved by Taylor as it ended 3-0 to the Blues.

Speaking of the red card, King did not agree with the awarding, but said: “I think it probably galvanised us a little bit more if I’m honest, it wasn’t a particularly good decision in our opinion.

“We rolled our sleeves up (after the red card), we had grit, determination, everything that we have not had in the last few weeks.

“It was a really pleasing performance.”
