ANDOVER NEW STREET FC 3 PORTLAND UTD FC 2

Saturday 23rd February 2019

DESPITE late goals from Jamie Beasley and Ryan McKechnie, Portland United fell 3-2 away at bottom side Andover New Street in the Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division.

A first-half brace from Matthew Scott and a second-half strike from Ilyas Warshow saw the Blues denied.

Portland missed numerous chances throughout the match and could have the won the match, but were unable to find a clinical touch time and time again.

There was early bad news for Portland, as Jamie Symes failed a late fitness test.

Portland could have gone 2-0 up inside the opening 10 minutes of the match, as Alex Godfrey and Beasley both missed one-on-one opportunities.

The first Andover goal came after a misjudged header from Sean Stewart saw the ball bounce towards the far post before Matthew Scott nodded over the line after 20 minutes.

A free-kick was given away by Stewart, which Andover crafted a corner from and from that set-piece Scott was able to head in for a second goal after 30 minutes.

Numerous missed chances followed for Portland as the half ended 2-0 to Andover.

The home side then extended their advantage when a good run down the left wing saw the ball crossed in for a simple tap-in for 3-0 after 60 minutes.

Portland’s response was nearly enough to earn them the points, with three efforts cleared off the line as they peppered the Andover goal in search of a lifeline.

Beasley then slotted in after 80 minutes to hand Portland a late hope.

McKechnie fired in again before full-time but Portland were unable to rescue an equaliser.

Portland boss Brendon King said: “When you miss chances and gift the other team goals you are going to lose games.

“We created enough chances to win two games and we ended up scoring two goals in the last 10 minutes.

“Unfortunately we were not good enough in the right areas of the field.”

But King added: “Some of the passages of play we played to get into the position to create the chances were really good.

“I would be a little bit more disheartened if we hadn’t created the number of chances we had. On another day we score seven.”
