PORTLAND UTD FC 6 BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS 2

Saturday 27th October 2018

A BRILLIANT 45-yard strike from Alex Godfrey sparked a revival in Portland that saw them cruise to a 6-2 victory over Bemerton Heath Harlequins in the Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division.

The strike, alongside goals from Steven Walker, Ryan McKechnie, Ross Doidge and a brace from Jamie Symes, saw the Blues recover from a goal down to thump the Harlequins 6-2, with Jack Slade and Jordan Matthews scoring for the visitors.

Portland initially went 1-0 down when the visitors countered effectively from a good Portland chance, and slotted past Sean Lillington.

However, Portland responded when Godfrey spotted the Bemerton goalkeeper Matty Fredericks off his line and smashed in the volley from 45 yards.

From a Godfrey corner, Portland then extended their lead, when Walker headed in after a scramble in the box.

Godfrey then played a great ball across to Crit Clarke, who charged forward before pulling the ball back to McKechnie who fired in to put the Blues 3-1 up.

Symes then won and fired in a penalty before half-time as the Blues went in 4-1 up.

Portland extended their lead again when a good ball from Watts allowed Symes to round Fredericks to put the Blues 5-1 up as the second half continued as the first had ended.

Bemerton earned a penalty with 75 minutes on the clock as they narrowed the deficit.

The islanders had the last word however, when Doidge flicked in a header in the 90th minute from a Godfrey corner to round off a fantastic performance from the home side and seal all three points.

Portland boss Brendon King said: “It was a big win. It was a really good performance, we played some really good stuff. I am really, really pleased. We spoke about certain things before the game and I did say to the boys we haven’t really clicked yet.

“We have been winning games without being at the peak. I said once we do really click then we are going to give someone a good hiding and certain parts of our game were an actual joy to watch. We played some really good football.”
